The course decision is the one that matters
For Nepali applicants arriving through study, the consequential choice happens before any visa exists. What you study, and at what level, determines whether you get post-study work rights, for how long, and whether the work you can then do counts towards anything.
Courses that are cheaper are frequently cheaper because they produce less afterwards. That is not hidden, it is published, and it is checkable before you enrol. Before paying a deposit, establish what the qualification entitles you to and what kind of role it leads to.
If the plan is to stay, the qualification is a means to a job that qualifies. Choosing it without knowing which job that is inverts the whole thing.
Genuine intention and evidence of funds
Two parts of a student application draw the most scrutiny, and they are related.
Genuine intention. Immigration New Zealand assesses whether you are genuinely coming to study. A course that has no visible connection to your previous education or work invites the question, particularly where a cheaper option would achieve the stated aim. Being able to explain the choice in one clear sentence is most of the answer.
Funds. Reaching the required balance is the easy part. Where the money came from, how long it has been there, and whether you genuinely have access to it are examined at least as closely. Recent lump sums with no explained origin, or funds held by a relative whose relationship and reason for supporting you are not set out, are the most common reason a well-funded application is questioned.
Prepare statements across a period, evidence of the underlying source, and a plain explanation of who is supporting you and why. The funds transfer scheme is worth reading about as one way to handle living costs.
English and qualifications
The score your provider needs to admit you and the score Immigration New Zealand needs for the visa are set independently. Meeting one is not evidence of meeting the other, and sitting the wrong test is a common way to lose a month.
Recognition of a Nepali qualification is NZQA’s decision, separate from Immigration New Zealand’s, and separate again from any professional registration body. Obtaining an assessment early is worth more than assuming a level and building a plan on it.
Documents to start on first
Police certificates and medicals come from third parties and are the most common cause of delay in an otherwise complete file.
The police certificate requirement follows the countries you have lived in, not your nationality, so periods working in the Gulf, in Malaysia, in India or in Korea usually add certificates that people do not anticipate. Immigration New Zealand publishes the issuing authority for each country.
Recruitment and advice
Giving immigration advice about New Zealand requires a New Zealand licence or a specific exemption, and that applies to consultancies operating in Kathmandu as much as anywhere else. Education agents and recruiters are not automatically advisers.
Charging a worker a premium for employment is unlawful in New Zealand. If someone asks you to pay for a job offer, that tells you something about the job. Any adviser’s licence can be checked on the public register in a minute, and it is worth doing before money changes hands.
Where to start
Routes Nepali applicants most often use
Ordered by how commonly they are used, not by how easy they are. Each one is assessed on different evidence.
-
01
Student visas
The most common entry route, and the one where course choice matters most.
-
02
Accredited Employer Work Visa
Requires an accredited employer and an approved job check before you can apply.
-
03
Residence through skilled work
Reached through qualifying work rather than through time spent in New Zealand.
Start these first
The four things that hold applications up
All four come from someone other than you, and all four run on their own timetable. Beginning them late is the most common self-inflicted delay.
-
Police certificates
From every country you have lived in for long enough to trigger the requirement, which is often more than one. Slow, and outside your control.

Medical examination
Has to be done by a doctor on the approved panel. A medical from your own doctor does not count, however thorough it is.

Qualification assessment
NZQA decides whether an overseas qualification is recognised and at what level. Immigration New Zealand does not, and professional bodies decide separately again.
